Socio-Economic Research and Intelligence Observatory - SERIO

SERIO

The Socio-economic Research & Intelligence Observatory (SERIO) is a joint venture between the  the University of Plymouth and the Plymouth 2020 Local Strategic Partnership, aiming to provide socio-economic research and intelligence for informed policy and decision making. Its key intention is to generate targeted research and intelligence to organisations within the public, private, voluntary and community sectors as well as to students and individual members of the public.

SERIO was formed as a direct result of a recommendation made within the Plymouth Local Economic Strategy 2006-2021 and Beyond.  Within this, the university was highlighted along with other LSP members as being a key delivery partner in the establishment of a City Observatory, to link with other observatories in the region.

Conceptually, SERIO is a new model developed to underpin and support the development of a knowledge-based economy, ensuring valuable information resources are used to inform and develop strategy and policy.  Its work is not confined purely to the City of Plymouth - SERIO will continue to deliver externally funded research for regional, national and international bodies (much as its predecessor SRRU has always done) with the findings made available, as relevant and appropriate for the benefit of local stakeholders.

Sitting within the university's Research & Innovation Division, SERIO comprises a dedicated interdisciplinary team of research staff experienced in research theory, methodology and methods. It is able to draw on particular expertise on a project-specific basis from academics eleswhere in the university, from other higher education institutions, and from a range of partners, stakeholders and established networks.

SERIO is closely linked to the university's Centre of Leadership and Organizational Excellence (CLOE). These two initiatives are intrinsically linked:

  • SERIO enables policy and decision makers to understand the situation, issues or problems in order to make informed decisions
  • CLOE provides an effective decision-making process into which this information and intelligence can be fed, also developing leadership capacity at all levels to execute plans quickly, efficiently and effectively
