Resource efficiency

 
During 2009 the University received ISO 14001 accreditation for its Environmental Management System. In terms of energy and water consumption and waste management, since 2004 the University has:

  • Reduced carbon emissions by 25%, meeting its Energy and Water policy target
  • Achieved Carbon Trust accreditation under their Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme
  • Reduced water consumption per student from 6.07 m3 to 4.93 m3, meeting its Energy and Water policy target
  • Reduced the amount of waste it produced from 537 tonnes to 403 tonnes
  • Increased the proportion of waste recycled from 11% to 47%
  • Launched a Community Green Screen to communicate the health of the campus and its environmental footprint
  • Achieved highly commended' in EAUC Green Gown Awards

The University is also committed to resource efficiency in relation to transportation and travel associated with its day to day activities, and since 2004:

  • Staff use of public transport has increased by 25%
  • The University's Centre for Sustainable Transport has been launched "to become a centre of national and international excellence in the field of sustainable transport"
  • The University actively encourages use of city park and ride facilities during key events such as open days and graduation ceremonies

Ethical, social and environmental considerations underpin sustainable procurement and investment at the University of Plymouth:

  • A sustainable procurement policy was approved in 2006
  • Fair Trade status was granted in 2006
  • High BREEAM ratings in capital projects ensure adherence to environmental principals - for example, as embedded in the University's £30m Roland Levinsky arts building
  • Prospectuses printed on paper awarded the European Union Eco-label and mailed in biodegradable plastic wrappers
  • A local procurement initiative Sell2Plymouth, has been established with other leading employers in the city.
