Community and Public Engagement
As the enterprise university we are committed to social responsibility and responsible business practice. We work hard to support schools, not-for-profit, voluntary and community groups with an extensive programme of community and public engagement including:
Widening access and participation for under-represented groups:

- Working with target schools and providing financial support for students in line with our Access agreement
- Managing Aimhigher within the Peninsula Area
- Undertaking community outreach activity
| Supporting and enhancing community and voluntary sector activity through the involvement of staff and student volunteering:

- Promoting student community based learning and action research
- Providing student volunteering opportunities through the Students' Union Volunteering in Plymouth (ViP) programme and the University's Active in Community (AiC) programme, enhancing student employability
- Advertising volunteer vacancies through the free on-line vacancy service Gradsouthwest
- Providing staff volunteering opportunities, linked with AiC and the University's HR strategy
| Staging public events and providing access to University services and facilities for public, community and voluntary group activity:

- Hosting community events on campus such as the Mutley and Greenbank Festival, Open House and the Shekinah Mission awards ceremony.
- Encouraging community use of the Roland Levinsky Building and other University facilities
- Peninsula Arts, the university's public events programme which for 2009 includes contributing to the city's celebration of Darwin 200
- Offering advice and guidance and a range of continuing professional development opportunities for individuals working in public, charity, community and voluntary organisations
| Determining the social and economic impact of university activity on the community, and providing community and voluntary group access to funded research to support intelligence gathering and future funding proposals:

- Promoting and funding the University's annual Community Research Awards
- Providing socio-economic research and intelligence for informed policy and decision making through SERIO - our Socio-Economic Research and Intelligence Observatory
- Advancing the region's sustainability agenda in partnership with our wider community

Breaking News!
The University of Plymouth has been shortlisted in three categories of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) 2010 Green Gown Awards.
The project entries Embedding Sustainability (Continuous Improvement - Institutional Change), Outside the Green Box (Courses) and Sell2Plymouth (Sustainable Procurement) now progress to stage two of the Awards process with winners announced in June.
